Finferries to modernize ferries across the Finnish Lakeland region in 2026–2027. ILS involved in designing a new level of reliability and environmental sustainability for inland waterway routes
A major ferry modernization program is underway in the Finnish Lakeland region, aiming to improve the safety, operational reliability, passenger comfort, and environmental sustainability of waterway crossing traffic. The modernization work covers ferry connections across Eastern and Central Finland, where ferries are an essential part of the local transport network for both residents and businesses.
The Lake Finland ferry fleet operated by Finferries (Suomen Lauttaliikenne Oy) will be renewed and electrified, reducing traffic emissions in the region by more than 90% compared to current levels. Environmental considerations are also central to the construction of the new vessels themselves: instead of building entirely new ferries, the project utilizes the hulls of existing vessels, thereby avoiding the CO₂ emissions associated with producing new steel.
The modernization program also takes into account the everyday needs of ferry users. Harbor areas, ramps, signage, and waiting areas are being improved to ensure smoother traffic flow for all road users. Particular attention is also being paid to accessibility as well as the safety of pedestrians and cyclists.
The main contractor responsible for vessel construction is the Parainen-based HL-Marine, commissioned by Finferries. HL-Marine has in turn selected ILS as the lead designer for the conversion work on a total of 14 ferries. The conversion work is being carried out in Savonlinna at the traditional Inkilänniemi shipyard, which has been revitalized through this major project.
Designing the ferry conversion work is an excellent fit for ILS, requiring both high-level theoretical expertise and a highly practical engineering approach. In the project, ILS is responsible for the classification and production design of the hull and machinery engineering packages. Cooperation between Finferries, HL-Marine, and ILS has progressed exceptionally well. The conversion work has remained on schedule, and the quality of the work has been first-class. As of April 2026, the first two ferries undergoing conversion are already at the outfitting quay, while the next two are in dry dock.
