As the naval architect partner of the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE), we implemented an oil spill multipurpose vessel project that attracted a lot of attention. The project started with the design of an oil spill recovery icebreaker and finally ended with the construction of the multipurpose vessel Louhi.

The concept of the environmental protection icebreaker is a multipurpose breaker with a reamer hull shape similar to the Fennica, which has excellent open water characteristics. In the end, however, the spectrum of multi-functionality was seen as too narrow-based. That’s when the Finnish Navy joined the project as a partner. Louhi’s operational profile was made relevant and broad-based in cooperation with the navy. It became an excellent multifunctional support and supply vessel for the navy, which is equipped with the most modern possible oil and chemical prevention equipment and the necessary large tanks for collected oil.
