Winter Navigation Motorways of the Sea

2012–19

The main goals of the WINMOS project, which was co-financed by the EU, were to develop a maritime winter navigation system and secure future icebreaking needs in the EU’s northernmost waters during winter, when a large part of the sea surface is covered by sea ice.

Within the scope of the WINMOS project were, for example, the acquisitions of Finland’s newest icebreaker Polaris and the motorized detachable icebreaking bow Saimaa.

The project had phases 1 and 2, and at different times we were partners in addition to the Finnish Transport Agency, Aker Arctic, Aalto University, Novia University of Applied Sciences, the Meteorological Institute, the Swedish and Estonian Maritime Administrations and Image Soft Oy.
