Since its completion in 2004, the passenger car ferry Suomenlinna II has operated on a regular basis between Helsinki’s market square and Suomenlinna. The ship’s route, especially in the winter in the harbor basin, where large ferries from Swedish traffic turn around and leave large blocks of ice littering the area, is particularly challenging. That’s why the design of the ship focused on the ability to navigate through ice. The vessel is diesel-electric, which has made it an economical vessel even in open water conditions.

Suomenlinna II is the first ferry vessel equipped with Compact Azipod propellers. Compared to the size of the boat, its propulsion power is large, 2 x 500 kW. Thanks to this, the ship’s icebreaking ability and its steering and maneuverability have proven to be excellent.

Suomenlinna II’s round trip takes about half an hour, so in summer there is only a short time for 350 passengers to leave the ship and for new ones to arrive, while the actual sailing takes about 10 minutes each way. The ship has kept its schedule well both in winter and summer.
